Shigaraki Ware (Shigaraki-yaki)


Shigaraki-yaki (Japanese: 信楽焼, Shigaraki ware) is a type of stoneware pottery made in Shigaraki area, Japan. The kiln is one of the oldest pottery producing places in Japan. With rich deposits of high quality clay, Shigaraki was an ideal location for potters as well. Shigaraki ware is known for the special quality of its clay. As a form of art using the media of clay and fire, Shigaraki ware communicates the Japanese aesthetic of wabi and sabi to the present age. In 1976, it has received the designation of traditional crafts from Japan.
