Mashiko Ware (Mashiko-yaki)

Mashiko ware (益子焼, Mashiko-yaki) is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally made in Mashiko, Tochigi. Traditional Mashiko-yaki has simple and rustic style with white, brown, and maybe a little red glaze.

In Japan, craftsmen are usually born into their profession, but in Mashiko, anyone can become a potter. Nowadays, potters looking to return to a more traditional Japanese lifestyle settled in the area. So modern pottery made in Mashiko today is found in many styles.
